During HGO’s 2026-27 season, Paul Appleby performs the role of Tamino in The Magic Flute. Previously for the company, Appleby performed as Jonathan in Saul (2019). Elsewhere during the 2026-27 season, he joins the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Handel & Haydn Society, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, and Toronto Symphony Orchestra, among others. Appleby’s 2025-26 season included performances and a commercial recording of Thomas de Hartmann’s Esther with Kirill Karabits and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; the title role of Berlioz’s La damnation de Faust with Tomáš Netopil and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra; a program of Bach Cantatas with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; the world premiere of Angélica Negrón’s For everything you keep losing with Fabio Luisi and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra; the title role of Stravinsky’s Œdipus Rex with Petr Popelka and the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra in Dvořák Hall, Rudolfinum, and at the Smetana Litomyšl Festival; the title role in a new production of Œdipus Rex at the Norwegian Opera & Ballet; a role debut as Captain Vere in Billy Budd for the Opéra national de Lyon; and a return to the Metropolitan Opera, where he has been a leading artist over many seasons, as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni and as Tamino in The Magic Flute. He is highly sought-after by leading conductors and directors including Gustavo Dudamel, Manfred Honeck, Philippe Jordan, Barrie Kosky, Sir Antonio Pappano, Elkhanah Pulitzer, Bartlett Sher, and Stephen Wadsworth.
