During HGO’s 2026-27 season, Butler Studio alumnus Joshua Hopkins performs as Pagageno in The Magic Flute. Previously for the company, he performed as Harry Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life (2016); Valentin in Faust and Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro (2016); The Pilot in The Little Prince (2015, 2004); Marcello in La bohème (2012, 2008); and Junius in The Rape of Lucretia (2012).  Elsewhere during the 2026-27 season, Hopkins returns to Canadian Opera Company as Belcore in The Elixir of Love and makes his house debut with Teatro Regio Torino as Silvio in Pagliacci. He also joins Toronto Symphony Orchestra in Mahler Symphony No. 8. During the 2025-26 season, Hopkins returned to perform as Papageno at both The Metropolitan Opera and Semperoper Dresden and Figaro in The Barber of Seville at San Francisco Opera, in addition to making a host of concert engagements. Hopkins’s most personal project, the song cycle Songs for Murdered Sisters, made its debut with HGO at Houston’s Rothko Chapel in 2022, and he brought it to two new venues this season, the Victoria Symphony in B.C. and University of Michigan’s Philharmonia Orchestra in Ann Arbor. Written by composer Jake Heggie and author Margaret Atwood, Songs for Murdered Sisters was conceived by Hopkins in remembrance of his sister, Nathalie Warmerdam, to bring awareness to ending intimate partner violence. The critically acclaimed film, directed by James Niebuhr, is available to watch on YouTube, and the JUNO-nominated digital album, released on the Pentatone label, is available on all streaming platforms.
