During HGO’s 2026-27 season, Grigory Shkarupa makes his company debut as the King of Egypt in Aida and performs as Sarastro in The Magic Flute. In the 2025-26 season, he performed as Basilio in The Barber of Seville at Teatro Regio di Parma and as the Dutchman and Daland in The Flying Dutchman. Shkarupa has served as a guest artist at European’s leading opera houses, including the Berlin State Opera, where he was an ensemble member from 2013 to 2024, singing such leading bass roles as Sarastro in The Magic Flute, Landgraf Hermann in Tannhäuser, König Heinrich in Lohengrin, Sparafucile in Rigoletto, Ferrando in Il trovatore, Basilio in The Barber of Seville, Dulcamara in The Elixir of Love, Colline in La bohème, and Timur in Turandot, among others. After graduating from Glinka Choral College in 2007, Shkarupa went on to study at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory as both a singer and a choral conductor. He was a prizewinner at the 1st Elena Obraztsova International Competition of Young Opera Singers in St. Petersburg, the Shalyapin International Competition in Yalta, the ‘Three Centuries of the Classical Romance’ International Competition in St. Petersburg, and the All-Russian Sviridov Vocal Competition in Kursk.
