EL MILAGRO DEL RECUERDO takes us back to the beginning of the story of Renata and Laurentino, the main characters in José “Pepe” Martinez and Leonard Foglia’s mariachi opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna. The opera opens on Christmas Eve, and what will be the first Christmas that Renata and Rafael will be without Laurentino as he works in America as a bracero.  Renata questions the trajectory their family is on, and what it means for their son to grow up with his father thousands of miles away.  The church nativity play is in full rehearsal, and Laurentino and his friend Chucho surprise everyone by coming home for Christmas.  His too-short visit to Michoacan for Christmas, but not the more widely celebrated Three Kings’ Day, highlights how America is changing him while his family stays behind.  Renata and Laurentino’s relationship is strained, but they do what they can to stay hopeful for their son Rafael.

“MILAGRO asks of us, how can I know if the choices I have made in the past are the right ones?  How can I make the best choices for the future?  How can I not squander the present?”

- Leonard Foglia, Librettist & Director
