About the Artist:

Johan Engels studied fine arts and design at the University of Pretoria and has designed extensively for opera, ballet, and theater in South Africa. With director David Pountney, he has collaborated on The Magic Flute (Bregenz Festival 2013 and 2014); Lulu and Khovanshchina (Welsh National Opera); The Passenger (Bregenz, English National Opera, Warsaw); Il tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi (Lyon); Maskarade (Bregenz; Royal Opera, Covent Garden); Osud (Vienna State Opera); Eight Little Greats (Opera North); Smetana's The Devil's Wall (Prague); Turandot (Salzburg Festival); Anything Goes (Grange Park Opera); and L'amore dei tre re, Zemlinsky's Der Kreidekrei, Johann Strauss's Simplicius, Pfitzner's Die Rose vom Liebesgarten, L'étoile, and Agrippina (Zurich). Current and recent work includes Parsifal (Chicago); Mavra and Iolanta (Bolshoi Theatre); Orpheus ed Euridice (Scottish Opera); Mathis der Maler (Theater an der Wien); Faust (Paris National Opera); and Thaïs (Gothenburg, Helsinki, Seville, Valencia, Los Angeles). Other productions  include The Elixir of Love (Los Angeles, Washington, Geneva, Madrid, Graz); Cinderella (Zurich Ballet); Beethoven's  Fifth (Vienna State Ballet); Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet (Opera North); Beatrice and Benedict (Chicago Opera Theatre);  and Otello (Parma, Monte Carlo, Los Angeles). He has also designed costumes for Vienna's New Year's Day Concert several times, most recently in 2013.
