DIRECTOR
About:
Emily is an award-winning theater director, creative producer, and educator with over 25 years’ experience in the industry, including a significant emphasis on new plays and musicals. In January of 2022, she was named the 4th Artistic Director of Human Race Theatre Company in Dayton, Ohio where she will lead artistic, community, and engagement endeavors into their next act. Prior to moving to Dayton, she curated new works at Houston Grand Opera’s Community and Learning initiative, including Some Light Emerges, the Telly Award-winning Star-cross’d web series, site-specific works Das Barbecü and Glory Denied, and community programs of import to neighbors in Houston. She is delighted to be returning to HGO to direct world premiere opera Another City, and is forever changed by the process of research and development for Jeremy Howard Beck and Stephanie Fleischmann's artistic vision. Within her own work, Wells explores the idea of home and community. Her directing credits include a critically acclaimed production of Grounded at her new artistic home, Rice University, Gulfshore Playhouse, Circuit Playhouse, and Theatreworks/USA, among others. She holds an MFA in Directing from the University of Memphis, a BA in Theater from Washington University in St. Louis, and is an AEA and SDC Member. In her early career, Wells stage-managed productions on- and off-Broadway, regionally and on tour.
