HGO SUMMER OFFERINGS 2023
HGO Community and Learning is proud to present two incredible opera camps in the summer of 2023, and a third produced by our friends at AFA. Camps are for students in grades 3-12 and take place in various places all over the Houston area including Downtown Houston. Financial aid is available.

HGO is proud to partner with AFA to provide additional training for our Art of Opera students. If you wish to participate in both AFA's Vocal Artist Intensive and HGO's Art of Opera, you will receive a discount valued at $75. Please email HGOCamp@hgo.org for more information.

CREATE AN OPERA | Grades 3-8

Create an Opera will be going offsite this year and into your community. This year, HGO is partnering with Wheeler Avenue Baptist for an exciting camp.
In one week, campers collaborate to write, design, build and perform a one-of-a-kind musical masterpiece based on a children’s story. This camp is perfect for singers and non-singers alike!

Art of Opera
$800 (2-week session)

Campers enhance their vocal and dramatic skills by rehearsing and performing a fully staged musical revue. This exciting camp fills quickly: register early to guarantee a spot! No audition is required to register. Please follow audition materials below for solo and lead opportunities. All campers will perform various selections from opera, musical theater, and more, accompanied, in portion, by one of AFA’s ensemble groups in a musical revue.
A final performance will take place on Friday, July 7 at Kinder HSPVA
Scholarships are available. Please complete the online registration form and answer Yes to “Are you interested in financial assistance?” on the registration form. An HGO Community and Learning representative will reach out to confirm your scholarship acceptance and amount.

If your camper would like to be considered for a principal role, they must submit a video audition by May 19th, 2023. You must be registered for camp to audition for a principal role. Callbacks for principals may take place in late spring 2023.
Students submitting a video to be considered for a solo must prepare one piece. Classical art song is preferred, however, musical theater pieces written in the golden-age style (before 1970) or solo versions of spirituals or hymns may be appropriate for singers who have not studied privately. All pieces should be accompanied by piano or a backing track and be performed from memory.

Now in its second year, the AFA Vocal Artist Intensive provides tools, training, and experiences appropriate for vocalists who are focused on developing themselves as young artists in a positive, supportive environment. Students will learn a new contemporary piece of music to be studied and developed with the VAI Faculty Artists (who are affiliated with Houston Grand Opera) during daily studio voice classes; they will also take part in ensemble singing, diction classes, as well as yoga, Alexander Technique and movement, all of which support the development and wellness of the voice. A series of seminars featuring special guests will include vocal health, college insights, career and professional life, and more.
