Music & Healing Returns for Season 2!

From October to March, HGO’s Artistic and Music Director, Patrick Summers, will meet with Medical and Musical professionals to discuss music’s growing use in clinical practice. This season we will cover subjects like Traumatic Brain Injury, PTSD in the Veteran Community, Social Emotional Wellness, Music Therapy and the Autism Spectrum, and more! Livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube.

Season One

In Season One of Music & Healing, Houston Grand Opera's Artistic and Music Director, Patrick Summers, met with medical professionals, community group leaders, and artists across disciplines to discuss the expanding role that music plays in medical care. We learned many things along the way, but were mostly reminded of music's intense power to heal- not just anecdotally, but clinically as well! 

Here are a few highlights from this season:

Episode One

November 17th, 2020 at 1 p.m. - Patrick Summers with Todd Frazier from Methodist Hospital

Patrick Summers will be joined by Todd Frazier, a composer and system director for the Houston Methodist Hospital’s Center for Performing Arts Medicine. Also joining the conversation is Jennifer Townsend, Manager of Creative Arts Therapies, who has helped lead the collaboration between HGO Community and Learning and Methodist Hospital on the Seeking the Human Spirit residencies. Episode Two

December 8th, 2020 at 1 p.m. - Patrick Summers with Renée Fleming, opera star and advocate

Opera star and advocate, Renée Fleming has “spearheaded a collaboration with the National Institute of Health” called Music and the Mind. She joins Patrick Summers to talk about this initiative, in the context of the pandemic. You can learn more about the Music and the Mind initiative here

 

Episode Three

January 19, 2021 at 1 p.m. - Patrick Summers with Guests on Memory Care

Nancy Gustafson, Songs By Heart, Dr. Joseph Masdeu, Director Nantz National Alzheimer Center Houston Methodist, Eyleen Braaten, Giving Voice Chorus, and Isabelle Raynauld, Documentarian, Tuning the Brain With Music.

 

Episode Four

February 2, 2021 at 1 p.m. - Patrick Summers with Guests on Loneliness

Artistic and Music Director, Patrick Summers, is joined by mezzo-soprano and Artistic Director Stephanie Blythe, researcher Dr. Marcel Zentner, and Houston-based psychotherapist Dr. John W. Price to discuss how music can combat loneliness.

 

Episode Five

March 30, 2021 at 1 p.m. - Patrick Summers with Guests on Parkinson's Care

Artistic and Music Director, Patrick Summers, is joined by Dr. Alexander Pantelyat of Johns Hopkins Center for Music and Medicine, Paula Wolfson, director of Singing with Parkinson's Toronto, and Dr. Gammon Earhart of Washington University of St. Louis to discuss the evolving world of music's role in Parkinson's care.
