During HGO's 2026-27 season, Gary McCann makes his company debut serving as the scenic and costume designer for Der Rosenkavalier. Originally from Northern Ireland and now based in Brighton, England, McCann works internationally as both a set and costume designer for opera, musicals, and theater. Elsewhere during the 2026-27 season, he serves as the set and costume designer for Eugene Onegin at Santa Fe Opera and Carmen at Irish National Opera, and as set designer for La traviata at Teatro Regio di Torino and Turandot at Santa Fe Opera. During the 2025-26 season, his designs were seen in The Flying Dutchman at Ural Opera Ballet, La traviata at Bucharest National Opera, La clemenza di Tito at Teatro La Fenice, La fanciulla del West at Teatro Communale de Bologna, Tristan and Isolde at Teatre Carlo Felice, Siegfried at National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, Carmen at Seattle Opera, Nabucco at Teatro alla Scala, and Der Rosenkavalier at Garsington Opera. He is the recipient of Italy’s 2026 Abbiati Award for Best Set Design for both Hamlet (Teatro Regio, Turin) and Die Liebe Der Danae (Opera Carlo Felice, Genoa). Recent productions include his first ballet designs for The Great Gatsby (Royal Danish Ballet, Copenhagen), the rapturously received The Merry Widow (Glyndebourne), and Fedra (Fondazione INDA), which was presented in the ancient amphitheaters of Syracuse and Pompeii.
