During HGO’s 2026-27 season, Charles Edwards serves as the scenic designer for Faust. Previously for the company, he designed the sets for Macbeth (1997), Katya Kabanova (2000), and Jenůfa (2004) and designed sets and lighting for Werther (2023). Elsewhere during the 2026-27 season, he designs the sets for Turandot for Scottish Opera. Edwards has collaborated with directors and choreographers David Alden, Christopher Alden, David McVicar, Karolina Sofulak, Annabel Arden, Matthew Eberhardt, John Savournin, and Dane Hurst, designing for Opera North, English National Opera, Teatro alla Scala,  the Metropolitan Opera, London’s Royal Ballet and Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Hamburgische Staatsoper. Edwards designed sets for ENO’s production of Jenůfa, which won the Olivier Award for Best New Opera Production in 2007. Opera North’s Little Greats season, for which Edwards was overall set and lighting designer, won the 2018 What’s On Stage Award for Event of the Year, and was nominated for the 2018 Manchester Theatre Award for Opera. The Verdi Trilogy, for which Edwards designed the sets at the Hamburgische Staatsoper, won the 2014 Anniversary Production International Opera Award. La Scala’s 2021 production of La Calisto, for which Edwards created the set, won the design prize of Premio Abbiati.
