Prince of Players.
About the Artist:
Michael Gieleta is making his Houston Grand Opera debut. This season he staged two neglected masterpieces at major international opera festivals: Puccini’s La rondine for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and Delius’s Koanga for Wexford Festival Opera. Recently, his version of Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor paired with Stravinsky’s Le rossignol at The Santa Fe Opera won enthusiastic reviews. His production of The Magic Flute has been seen at Chicago Opera Theater, and his production of Smetana’s The Kiss, created for the Wexford Festival, has also been presented at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. His groundbreaking Wexford production of Statkowski’s Maria was performed by the Gdansk Opera in the original shipyards where the Communist grip on Eastern Europe started to crumble. Gieleta enjoys a strong relationship with opera companies in South Africa and he has staged a number of major titles in Cape Town and Pretoria. His theater work seen in America includes Lingua Franca as part of Brits-off-Broadway (59E59 Theaters), Amadeus (Maltz Jupiter), and the first revival of Coward’s Bitter Sweet, starring Sian Philips, at Bard Summerscape.
