About the Artist: Nigel Levings is the only Australian lighting designer to have won Broadway’s prestigious Tony Award—for his work on Baz Luhrmann’s La bohème, which also earned him Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Ovation awards. Throughout his career, he has lit more than 450 productions including 149 operas and twenty-five musicals. His credits include The Demon for the Bregenz Festival and Opera Zurich; The King and I for Broadway and London’s West End, for which he won the Outer Circle Critics Award for best lighting design and was nominated for Drama Desk and Tony awards; La bohème at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg; Falstaff at Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris; Orfeo at the Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin and in Innsbruck, Austria; The Queen of Spades for The Dallas Opera; Romeo and Juliet for Lyric Opera of Chicago, Sir John in Love for English National Opera; The Flying Dutchman for Baden Baden Festival House and the Mariinsky Theatre; and Simon Boccanegra for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, and Canadian Opera Company. Recent work includes Bliss for Opera Australia and the Edinburgh Festival; and Of Mice and Men, Lakmé, Macbeth, and The Love of the Nightingale at the Sydney Opera House.
