ABOUT THE OPERA
Gabriel is the best trumpet player at Rio Grande City High School,
a dutiful son–and undocumented. When he has a chance to attend a
top music school, he must to choose between opportunity and safety,
secrecy and trust.
Past the Checkpoints is based on the real-life
experiences of mariachi trumpeter David Moreno. David's story of
growing up undocumented in Texas came to the attention of Houston
Grand Opera when he was collaborating with the company on
Cruzar la Cara de la Luna (the world's first mariachi
opera) and this 45-minute chamber opera, commissioned by HGO's O.N.
for Young Professionals and designed for audiences of all ages, is
the result. HGO returns to Talento Bilingüe de Houston, where
Past the Checkpoints premiered in February 2013, for
a concert performance of this inspiring, energetic work and a
community conversation about the opera's themes of education,
immigration, and courage.
FROM THE PRESS
"[Past the Checkpoints] is another of the relevant,
accessible, important projects that seek to enlighten through
beauty rather than brash debate. If we're going to have a
conversation about immigration reform, we ought to know something
about the people we're talking about. At the same time, the opera
plays on themes familiar to most everyone, regardless of
immigration stance. We all have secrets we yearn to tell and walls
we long to transcend." - Lisa Falkenberg, Houston
