    Houston's colorful past, present, and future set the stage for Song of Houston- an ongoing initiative that creates new works based on stories that define the unique character of our city.

    Song of Houston makes opera relevant through stories that engage hearts and minds. These stories are told through local, national, and international collaborative projects. More than 335,000 people have experienced Song of Houston through music making, photography, creative writing, and other programs that incorporate all of the arts.

  • “ON THIS MUDDY WATER”: VOICES FROM THE HOUSTON SHIP CHANNEL
    Commissioned by Houston Grand Opera in celebration of the Ship Channel's centennial, this original song cycle offers compelling insights into the people at the heart of one of Houston's most vibrant centers of industry. Performances in December 2014/January 2015.
  • VETERANS SONGBOOK
    HGOco's multiyear Veterans Songbook project gives voice to the stories of Houston-based men and women who have served our country, and to the stories of their loved ones, sparking a community-wide conversation about conflict and courage, strength and sacrifice.
  • PAST THE CHECKPOINTS
    “Relevant, accessible, important.” – Houston Chronicle
    Gabriel is the best trumpet player at Rio Grande City High School, a dutiful son–and undocumented. When he has a chance to attend a top music school, he must to choose between opportunity and safety, secrecy and trust. Based on the real-life experiences of mariachi trumpeter David Moreno, this energetic chamber opera will inspire audiences of all ages. Performances in September 2014.

     Through Song of Houston, Houston Grand Opera is the only opera company ever to win the National MultiCultural Institute's Leading Lights Award and the only organization in Texas to receive a grant from the national consortium ArtPlace. Explore how Song of Houston has brought opera to our diverse community since 2007 through past programs.
