Paul Pyant

British native Paul Pyant will light the spring production of Handel’s Xerxes at HGO. He has designed lighting for ten other productions at Houston Grand Opera since 1989, including last season’s Rigoletto and Brief Encounter. Other Houston Grand Opera credits include lighting for Verdi’s Don Carlo and Wagner’s Tannhäuser and Der Fliegende Holländer. He is a graduate and associate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He has long associations with the Glyndebourne Festival; English National Opera; Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Royal National Theatre; English National Ballet; and Northern Ballet Theatre. Theatre work includes productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Donmar Warehouse, and productions in London’s West End and on Broadway in New York. Broadway productions have included Peter Hall’s production of Orpheus Descending, which earned him a Tony Award nomination in the category of best lighting, and most recently Electra by director David Leveaux.
