Opera to Go!

Opera to Go! performs 45 minutes of high-energy opera at your school or community venue.  These shows are sung in English and are designed especially for today’s audiences.  You can bring costumes, sets and beautiful singing to your school for less than $2.00 per student!  All teachers will receive a Study Guide to help prepare their students for the opera.

Rates are $450 for a single performance and $700 for back-to-back performances of the same opera.
Maximum audience capacity is 300. Mileage charges apply for sites 35 miles or more outside downtown Houston.

 Humperdinck: Hansel & Gretel

 Join Hansel & Gretel as they make musical mischief!  This magical opera is a perfect introductory opera for young audiences, as well as a favorite among opera lovers.  Based on the classic Grimm's fairy tale, this opera transports students to a time where houses can be made of gingerbread and little old ladies aren't always nice.

González-Medina: How Nanita Learned to Make Flan

Nanita's cobbler father works so hard that he has no time to smile, much less make Nanita a pair of new shoes for her First Communion. Nanita takes on the task herself, fashioning multicolored shoes out of leather scraps. Once on her feet, the shoes magically lead her to the desert home of a cruel ranchero, where she is pressed into service as a Cinderella-like house servant. When a special parrot arrives in the household, he teaches Nanita the secret to making great flan and also helps her find a way to rejoin her father.

How Nanita Learned to Make Flan will be at the Miller Outdoor Theatre Sept. 28 through Oct. 2 at 11 AM daily.

Warwick: Cenicienta en España

The glass slippers, the pumpkin, the evil stepsisters...they're all here!  This delightful version of Cinderella is a bilingual retelling of one of the most well known fairy tales around the world.  Set in Spain, this comic version has an allergy-prone fairy godmother and the most unusual stepsisters you'll ever hear.

Cenicienta en Espana will be at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in the Spring of 2010.  Check back in February for specific dates!

 

 

Gounod: Romeo and Juliet

Can two dreamers from warring families find the courage to love one another? Opera to Go! presents scenes from Gounod's luscious Shakespearean opera, adapted specifically for high school students with opportunities for student participation. These performances will correspond with the Shakespeare requirement at most schools.
