Does opera on film always have to be dreadful? Not necessarily, though it usually is!
There is something about this particular art-form that depends for maximum effect on being experienced live. The Met have discovered that their HD transmissions are only popular when they are really live - the equivalent of a live sports cast. Occasionally there is something so special, either about the performance itself, or about the way it has been filmed, that can make opera on film unforgettable. Please join me for an evening of opera at the movies, in which I will introduce two examples of opera on film that I consider to be truly outstanding.
