Recent HGO Studio Alumnus Octavio Moreno last appeared at HGO as Sourin in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades. Last season, he also sang a Noble in Wagner’s Lohengrin and Belcore in performances of Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love. In 2009, the baritone stepped in at the last minute to sing the title role in the second and third acts of Verdi’s Rigoletto at Miller Outdoor Theatre, and that same year appeared as Marullo in Rigoletto and as a soloist in Chorus! Originally from Hermosillo, Mexico, Mr. Moreno studied at the Universidad de Sonora and the Academy of Vocal Arts (AVA) in Philadelphia. He won third place in the 2008 Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers and sang on behalf of Mexico in the 2009 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. During his HGO Studio Fellowship, Mr. Moreno performed at Rienzi and at the Mexican Consulate in celebration of Mexican Independence Day. He also returned to Hermosillo, Mexico where he gave a special recital performance called Sin Fronteras (“Without Borders”) in honor of Mexico 2010.
