Michael McGarty has collaborated frequently with composer Jake Heggie and librettist Terrence McNally, having designed sets for the Heggie opera The End of the Affair as well as this production of Dead Man Walking, which has been seen at New York City Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Opera Pacific and on national tour. He also designed sets for Terrence McNally’s plays Master Class and The Stendahl Syndrome. Mr. McGarty’s other notable credits include the revival of Wait Until Dark and Julia Sweeney’s God Said “Ha,” both on Broadway, and numerous productions Off Broadway and at regional theaters such as the New York Shakespeare Festival, the Old Globe Theatre, the Dallas Theater Center, Mark Taper Forum and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He recently designed the premiere production of The Secret Letters of Jackie & Marilyn at Pittsburgh Public Theatre and The Invention of Love at Wilma Theatre. He is a resident artist at Trinity Repertory Company, where he has designed productions regularly for twenty-two years, including the recent A Delicate Balance, Our Town, The Henriad and The Buz’Gem Blues. Mr. McGarty teaches at Brown University and at the Rhode Island School of Design.
