About the Artist: Newbury is a theater and opera director based in New York City. His work has been produced throughout North America and, most recently, in Europe. His production of Virginia for Wexford Opera Festival recently won the 2010 Irish Times Theater Award for “Best Opera Production.” His work has also been nominated for a Grammy® award (Bernstein’s Mass with Marin Alsop), a Drama Desk award (Best Actor, Candy and Dorothy), and the GLAAD Media award (Winner: Candy and Dorothy, Nominated: Kiss and Cry). Newbury is committed to developing new work, and has directed the world premieres of several plays and musicals in New York City, five of which have been published or recorded for commercial release. His work in opera includes collaborations with many top American composers, including Ricky Ian Gordon and Pulitzer Prize winners John Adams and Lewis Spratlan. Newbury is currently developing a new opera with composer/librettist Todd Almond and a new opera with Gregory Spears and Greg Pierce. He has enjoyed repeat engagements with several leading American opera companies, including the Minnesota, Santa Fe, New York City, Cincinnati, Glimmerglass, Wolf Trap, Portland, and Houston Grand operas, as well as the Chicago Opera Theater, Opera Colorado, and Opera Theater of St. Louis. Newbury has also directed for Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, Bard Summerscape, L’Opera de Montreal, and the San Francisco Symphony. Upcoming engagements include co-directing the world premiere of the Santa Fe Opera and Opera Company of Philadelphia co-production of Oscar, in addition to new productions for the Palm Beach, Portland, Minnesota, Virginia, and Central City operas. Newbury was raised in Maine and attended Bowdoin College and Oxford University.
