Canadian baritone John Fanning makes his company debut as the Music Teacher in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, a role he has sung twice at the Metropolitan Opera, where he has sung a wide array of roles throughout the past nine seasons. Mr. Fanning’s other Met credits include Mandryka in Richard Strauss’s Arabella and Faninal in that composer’s Der Rosenkavalier, Count Almaviva in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, the Wagner roles of Gunther in Götterdämmerung and the Wanderer in Siegfried, the Four Villains in Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffman, the Father in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, and John Plake in Wolf-Ferrari’s Sly opposite Plácido Domingo. He recently sang the Conte di Luna in Verdi’s Il Trovatore at (Opéra de Quebec), Sharpless in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly (Kentucky Opera), Kolenaty in Janácek’s The Makropoulos Case in (Nantes and Angiers, France); the title role of Verdi’s Macbeth (L’Opéra de Montréal), Tonio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (Vancouver Opera) and Horace Tabor in Moore’s The Ballad of Baby Doe (Calgary Opera). He has also appeared in the Wagnerian roles of Wotan in Das Rheingold and Gunther in Götterdämmerung (Canadian Opera Company). Mr. Fanning was recently inducted as a member of the Order of Canada in honor of his artistic achievements.
