About the Artist: Francesca Zambello's American directorial debut took place at Houston Grand Opera with her production of Fidelio in 1984. She debuted in Europe at La Fenice in Venice with Beatrice di Tenda in 1987 and has since staged new productions at major theaters and opera houses in Europe and the United States. Her numerous awards include the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French government, the Russian Federation's medal for Service to Culture, three Olivier Awards, and two Evening Standard Awards. Recently, she developed and directed the world premiere of Christopher Theofanidis's Heart of a Soldier for San Francisco Opera, where she served as artistic advisor from 2006-11. She also directed the first international production of Carmen ever to be presented at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing; the world premiere of An American TragedyCyrano de Bergerac, and Les Troyens for the Metropolitan Opera; Carmen and Don Giovanni for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; Boris GodunovWar and PeaceBilly Budd, and William Tell for the Paris Opera; and the Ring cycle for the San Francisco Opera. She is the artistic and general director of the Glimmerglass Festival and was recently named artistic director of Washington National Opera.
