Information about YAVA 2012

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. YAVA 2012 will take place in Houston from May 21 – 26, 2012. Successful applicants will be required to arrive in Houston no later than the afternoon of May 20 and will leave on May 27, 2012.

2. The course will be scheduled from 8am to 9pm each day, and attendance at all sessions is compulsory.

3. Costs - There is no fee for the course, and all accommodation and meals will be provided. Applicants are responsible only for their travel costs (though it may be possible to provide some assistance to those in financial need).

4. Eligibility – Applicants must be born after 1 June 1986 and must be engaged in undergraduate vocal study. Recent graduates who have not yet commenced their master's degree may also be considered. All applicants should intend to pursue an operatic career.

HOW TO APPLY

5. Applications should be submitted online via YAP Tracker. Applications open on January 16, 2012. The application deadline is February 24, 2012.

6. Applicants are required to submit two video clips of contrasting repertoire. These can be uploaded either to YouTube (videos must be set to “Public”) or to YAP Tracker.

7. Two references are required – one from your current voice teacher plus one from one of the professional types listed below.
a) Opera Stage Director / Opera Workshop Director
b) Opera General Director
c) Music Director/Conductor
d) Artistic Administrator
e) Department Chairman or Dean
f) Choral Director
g) Pianist or Coach

8. A non-refundable $20 application processing fee must be paid online at the time of submission.

What Happens Next?

9. Selection criteria – Singers must demonstrate major operatic potential supported by musical and theatrical training. Applications are reviewed by HGO Studio staff and are considered confidential. No feedback will be offered to unsuccessful applicants.

10. There are no live auditions; all decisions will be made based on applications and references.

11. Notification – Houston Grand Opera Studio will e-mail you by Friday, April 13, 2012 to tell you whether or not your application has been successful.
