Houston Grand Opera (HGOco) Singer Auditions

Houston Grand Opera announces auditions for a new East + West chamber opera, New Arrivals. Auditions will be held at the Wortham Theater Center, 510 Preston Street, on:

Monday, February 13, 2012, 5-7pm
Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 10am-12pm

New Arrivals identifies several of Houston’s vibrant and diverse communities. As such, please carefully review the casting information below to determine if your experience, background, and voice type are appropriate. All singers should have excellent expressive vocal control and exceptional English diction.

• Soprano: Lyric, bright voice. The character is a young woman from Nigeria.

• Mezzo: Lyric mezzo, full range (low to high), solid lower register. The character is an ageless Cambodian woman.

• Tenor: Strong, able to accomplish leaps in register, clarity of text is crucial even with non-lyric vocal lines. The character is young man from the Bhutan; ethnically Nepalese.

• Baritone: Lyric, clarity of text also crucial. The character is a young man from the Sudan.

The rehearsal/production period is tentatively June 1 – June 24, 2012

Auditions should include two arias of contrasting style and tempo, from memory, one of which must be in English. HGOco suggests including a 20/21st-century selection. Operatic repertoire is preferred, but standard oratorio selections will be accepted. Sight reading may be requested. HGOco will provide an accompanist, but singers are required to bring their own music.

For questions or to schedule an audition, please call 713-546-0211.
