Houston Grand Opera Association announces auditions for children’s chorus for its winter repertory production of Dead Man Walking. Boys (with unchanged voices) and girls ages 7 – 17 are invited to audition. The opera is sung in English and conducted by Patrick Summers. Rehearsals start in November of 2010; performances begin January 22, 2011 and run through February 6, 2011. Children’s Chorus director for the production is Karen Reeves. Audition Date: Sunday, September 19, 2010 – 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM Audition Location: Wortham Theater Center, 510 Preston Avenue, 6th floor Houston, TX 77002? For this audition, the child should be prepared to sing from memory a song of his/her choice, in a non-belt style. Each child should bring a copy of their music for the pianist, whom the Opera will provide. Taped accompaniment will not be used. Section Violin Thursday, October 28, 2010 Section Bass Audition has been postponed till May 2011. General Information The Houston Grand Opera Orchestra is a core group of 48 musicians and is the sole orchestra for the Houston Grand Opera. There are approximately 35 opera services from January through May. The per-service rate is $225.00 for the 2010/11 season. Core members may participate in the HGO health insurance plan with a percentage paid by the association. A 10% contribution is made to the AFM Pension fund. This is a joint audition with Houston Ballet. The Houston Grand Opera Chorus is a professional group of diverse men and women of all professions and backgrounds. Choristers rehearse weekday evenings and weekends for each repertory period. In the 2010-2011 season, a new chorister could earn $2,000.00 per production.
The 2010-2011 season productions in which the chorus will participate are: Madame Butterfly Peter Grimes Dead Man Walking Lucia di Lammermoor The Marriage of Figaro
Auditions should include two arias of contrasting style, tempo, in original language, and by memory. Operatic repertoire is preferred, but standard oratorio selections will be accepted. Sight reading may be requested. HGO will provide an accompanist, but singers are required to bring their own music.
