HGOco offers a variety of imaginative after- and in-school programs that encourage students to explore storytelling with words and music. Houston Grand Opera teaching artists provide project-based learning that supplements coursework, inspiring students to create and express themselves through art.

    Create an Opera (Grades 3-6)

An HGOco teaching artist will guide students to create their own opera, writing lyrics and music that align with classroom curriculum. Students will see their original work come to life in a staged performance for parents and peers.  This program is modeled on HGOco's supremely successful summer camp and designed for six to ten classroom visits.

    Metaphor Project (Grades 6-9)

Students learn about civic rights and social responsibility with Houston Grand Opera teaching artists who lead them in writing original metaphors based on their own life experiences. Professional composers will then write original musical works based on your students' inspiring metaphors. Designed for six to ten classroom sessions, the Metaphor Project works with STEM TO STEAM curriculum or other core subject areas.

    My Voice (Grades 4-12)

My Voice brings together Writers in the Schools (WITS), University of Houston Moores School of Music composition students, and Houston Grand Opera teaching artists for an unparalleled creative experience.  WITS helps students to "raise their voices" by writing poems on hard-to-discuss topics. UH composers then set students' words to music in original songs that are presented by Houston Grand Opera artists and students for parents and peers in a memorable performance. Designed for five to eight classroom sessions in any subject.

I Am Called Me (Grades 7-10)

Students create original words and music to identify and discuss social cruelty and bullying in their school. Final presentations are tailored according to school, student, and teacher needs; in the past they have ranged from 15-minute music and spoken word Metaphor Projects to a 30-minute fully arranged choral work by composer Omari Tau.  Developed in partnership with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and Holocaust Museum Houston (HMH), I Am Called Me is designed for eight to ten classroom sessions in any subject area. (Choral music designed to be learned during chorus class.)
