    Where is home? Is it where we are born? Or where we live most of our lives? Is it with the family we leave behind or with the new ones we create? Song of Houston asked these questions through a project titled Mexico 2010.

    HGOco's Home and Place is a partnership with Houston Independent School District and Neighborhood Centers Inc., to create programs that promote place-building through art.

  • PIECES OF 9/11 MEMORIES FROM HOUSTON

    2011

    In September 2011, Houston Grand Opera (HGO) presented the premiere of Pieces of 9/11 - Memories from Houston, a specially commissioned song cycle by renowned U.S. composer Jake Heggie and librettist Gene Scheer.

  • BAKER-RIPLEY TEEN PROGRAM

    2011

    Because of positive response to Even Start, HGOco began a project with Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center teens during their summer-school session in 2011.

  • A WAY HOME

    2010

    In the spring of 2010, Opera to Go! premiered a work for middle- and high-school students called A Way Home. Composed by Ethan Frederick Greene with a libretto by Irene Keliher, this 45-minute bilingual opera told the story of a teenaged girl and her father, who traveled from Houston to Mexico to scatter her mother's ashes.

  • EVEN START

    2009

    In 2009, HGOco began a project with Baker-Ripley Neighborhood Center. Through a program called Even Start, HGOco helps immigrant mothers, whose children attend Baker-Ripley Elementary School, develop language acquisition and other skills.

    What happens when opera and the blues come together? A striking new experience in lyrical storytelling and musical composition.

  • THE NEFF PROJECT

    2008 - 2009

    Fascinating stories about people and places, in our own backyard… enter The Neff Project. Students of Houston's Pat Neff Elementary School undertook a year-long, curriculum-based exploration of the distinct character of their Sharpstown community.

  • THE REFUGE

    2007 - 2008

    Song of Houston's first commissioned work, The Refuge-Houston Grand Opera's 36th world premiere-brought together stories from Houston's Mexican, Central American, Indian, Pakistani, Soviet-era Jewish, African, and Vietnamese communities in an ambitious and historic new work.
