    It’s Not Just Music!
Opera is visual art, history, literature, and social commentary set to beautiful music.

Join us for dinner, an in-depth opera preview, and discussion. Together, we’ll brainstorm ways to incorporate themes and ideas into your curriculum, followed by a Houston Grand Opera dress rehearsal of Otello, The Magic Flute (this year's student performance), or Die Walküre, HGO's second installment of Wagner's Ring cycle. These workshops are designed to help you and your students connect with opera in relevant ways, and as a bonus, you’ll earn TEA Continuing Education hours by attending.

    Price: $25 per workshop

Magic Flute 180x106   Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - The Magic Flute
    January 27, 2015, 6:00 p.m.
    Dress Rehearsal 7:30 p.m.
Mozart's genius is supremely evident in his last opera, The Magic Flute. The fairy tale is matched with some of the most stunningly beautiful music ever written. From the coloratura pyrotechnics of the Queen of the Night, to Pamina's anguished lament, to the comic love duet of Papageno and Pagagena, the music illustrates Mozart's profound understanding of humanity. Join us as we study Mozart and the dawn of Enlightenment.

HGO has embarked on a new production of the RING - one opera each year for four years. HGOco is pleased to offer professional development about myth, mythology and the power of learning through metaphor and gaming.
Die Walkure 180x106   Richard Wagner - Die Walküre
    April 15, 2015, 5:00 p.m. (Please note early start.)
    Dress Rehearsal 6:30 p.m.

    The journey continues...
In Die Walküre, the story of the Ring moves from the god's home, Valhalla - where Wagner left us at the end of Das Rheingold - to earth. Having bought Freia's feedom with the ring, Wotan sets about regaining the golden band and its unique power.

Story: Wotan must sacrifice his son Siegmund, renounce his daughter Sieglinde, and abandon his favorite child, Brünnhilde, the leader of the Valkyries. Like all the Ring operas, Die Walküre stands on its own as great spectacle, masterful storytelling, and electrifying music.

HGOco and its partner schools continue to explore mythology and man through this year's Ring theme: creativity. Using different approaches to the Norse myths on which the Ring is based, teachers will be led through a series of "gaming" techniques to engage the imagination. (Bring a computer, tablet, or smartphone!)
