High School Voice Studio
Auditions are now closed and the next High School Voice Studio class has been chosen.
  • Houston Grand Opera’s High School Voice Studio is a prestigious year-long scholarship program for high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a professional singing career.

Each spring, eight students are selected from the greater Houston area to participate in the program. They receive weekly private voice lessons and vocal coaching from Houston Grand Opera staff focusing on technique and repertoire. In addition to presenting two recitals, participants gain “behind the scenes” experience with a professional opera company by observing rehearsals, participating in master classes with world-class artists, and attending HGO performances. This year, participants will premiere new works by young composers as a part of a collaboration with the American Festival for the Arts.

This year’s studio includes members from Cinco Ranch HS, Clear Creek HS, Friendswood HS, HSPVA and Klein HS.

Tickets for next season's student performance will go on sale May 1, 2014.

  • Benefits of belonging to the Houston Grand Opera High School Voice Studio

Each studio attends ten master classes led by a variety of voice teachers, voice specialists and HGO mainstage performing artists. Examples of previous master class artists include Joyce DiDonato, Liam Bonner, Christine Goerke, Ana Maria Martinez, Stephen King and Suzanne Mentzer.

Studio participants attend four studio classes, where they learn English and Italian diction rules, Audition Etiquette, Time Management Skills and Vocal Pedagogy.  Studio members participate in mock auditions and gain performance opportunities through HGO.

The class of 2014 will graduate having seen six HGO mainstage operas: Aida, Die Fledermaus, The Passenger, Rigoletto, Carmen and Das Rheingold.  They will also attend the Concert of Arias and local university opera performances.

Studio members not only receive valuable mentorship throughout the college application process, the also receive a stipend to be spent on travel to auditions, college application fees, pianists for auditions and other college application related expenses.

HGO pays for professional video recordings of each singer in the fall, which can be used for pre-screenings at colleges and universities.
